Homework is recognized as an extremely valuable activity. Parental involvement in students’ homework is an essential part of the educational program. Parents are encouraged to monitor assignments. Your child should be able to do the assignments independently. Help with spelling and grammar is encouraged. For math assignments, please make sure your child understands the concepts. If your child does need your assistance, please indicate this in writing at the top of the page. Homework will be given each night, except weekends, and will be reviewed the next day in class. If an assignment is not completed, the student is expected to make it up by the next day. If assignments continue to be missed, homework will be made up during recess. Please check regularly that your child has completed all of the assignments and sign the planner.
Research on reading has demonstrated that the best way to learn to read is to read. Research on literacy also shows that the greater the number of minutes spent just reading, the greater the child’s achievement. New York State requires that children read a minimum of 25 chapter books during the school year. Students are expected to read 20 minutes each night.
Time for independent reading will also be given during the school day. It is important that your child come prepared with a book each day. Independent reading should include a variety of genres.
Tests and Quizzes:
Tests and quizzes need to be signed and corrected. They will be sent home in a folder. Class work may also be graded. Tests, class work, homework, projects, and class participation are all used to calculate the final quarter grade.
Please send your child to school with a healthy snack. We have a working snack, so please don’t send in anything that could ruin books and papers. Water is preferred in a pull up top plastic bottle in order to avoid spills.
If participating in instrumental music, please check to see what class work was missed and make it up.
When your child is absent please call the school after 8:00. Upon your child’s return, please provide a note explaining the reason for the absence. Missed work may be picked up in the office after 3:00. Be sure to call the office and let them know you are requesting work for your child so that I will have it ready for you.
All students must have a note if someone other than a parent is picking up your child. We are not permitted to dismiss your child to another person without written permission. Walkers will be dismissed through the third grade doors (near the playground). If a bus student is to be dismissed as a walker, or if your child has permission to walk home alone, please let me know in writing. Be sure your child is aware of any changes as well.
